A Letter from
Discovery's President
January 21, 2009
Dear Discovery
Members:
It’s a new year
and our new board is looking forward to exciting new adventures
for Discovery. We will continue some of your favorite
activities: the retreats, game nights, the movie buffs and the
cooking group. But we are also planning some new ways of doing
things. We are in a strong financial position, but we realize
that we need to expand our appeal to new segments of the gay
community, while providing the kinds of activities that have
kept many of you involved with Discovery for so many years. We
remain strongly committed to creating spaces where alcohol and
drugs don’t spoil the environment of friendship and intimacy. We
will not be launching a paid membership structure at this point,
but we do hope to better identify and serve our target audience
of those who have been on retreats and consider themselves as
key stakeholders.
Our seven member
Board
is committed to “have fun, get others involved and not get
burned out.” We are realistic that we can only be successful if
our members participate in planning, creating and promoting our
activities. We appreciate our dedicated friends who came out
last fall to give us a vision of the kind of organization they
would like to see and we will do our best to make as many of
these ideas as possible come to fruition. There are a few ways
that we invite you to participate in helping to create a new
Discovery and to be a part of the change that you have asked
for.
1) We
will be having a retreat this summer and we need volunteers to
staff a retreat committee. Contact Matt

2) We
need a committee to plan and carry out social events. The
committee will only meet quarterly. Contact Tom.

3) We
don’t currently have anyone who is interested in leading
outreach activities, such as organizing materials and volunteers
for community fairs. If anyone would like to take that on for
Discovery, contact Lorenzo.

4) We
are soliciting ideas for changing the Discovery Community name
and updating our mission statement to be more consistent with
what we do. In the meantime, we are dropping “Community” from
our name in most communications. If you would like to
participate in this ad hoc group contact Peter

We will be having
a volunteer fair in late February where you can find out more
about these and other opportunities and you can also propose
activities that you want to do as well. Look for details about
the fair on the website soon.
We look forward to
seeing you soon and often in 2009 and thank you for your
involvement and support of Discovery!
Lorenzo Taylor
